Forecasting 101

Why Small Samples Can Mislead

Understand why one or five forecasts prove little and how Matrix Sig uses resolved sample size as performance context.

Definition

Small samples can make forecasting performance look stronger or weaker than it is because short runs are volatile and provide limited evidence.

Short runs are volatile

A forecaster can be right once or several times in a row through a mixture of skill and chance. A short run does not show whether probabilities remain useful across different questions and outcomes.

Read the count with the score

Forecast Score, Correct Outcome Rate, and calibration observations should be read alongside resolved count. A high score from five resolved forecasts deserves more caution than a similar score supported by a long record.

Matrix Sig’s ranking context

Official Matrix Sig ranking begins after 25 resolved predictions. This is an eligibility rule for ranking, not a universal statistical guarantee or a claim that every record above it is proven skill.
